Practical information
The first interactive ELS lunch meeting, to be held on 19 February from 12:00 to 13:00, will focus on systematic case law analysis as a research method. Using concrete examples, Charlotte Mol, Anne-Jetske Schaap, Margje C., and Stijn van Deursen will explain how they have applied these research methods in their work and discuss the choices they made in this context. This includes methods of data collection and approaches to analysing the identified judgments. These presentations will serve as a starting point for a broader discussion on the do’s and don’ts of this type of research.
LEVEL: Basic
METHOD: Qualitative
ABOUT THE LECTURER:
- Dr. Charlotte Mol is Assistant Professor at the Utrecht Centre for European Research into Family Law(UCERF) and the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law. Her research focuses on strengthening children’s rights within family law through research combining human rights and family law with empirical methods.
- Margje obtained her LLM from the Legal Research Master cum laude from Utrecht University and worked as a junior lecturer for the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law at Utrecht University before starting her PhD. Her current research addresses the legal framework applicable to consumer misinformation on social media and what enforcement strategies are available to reduce consumer vulnerability. She is also interested in legal developments in the field of influencer marketing and has already conducted research into child and family influencers.
- Stijn van Deursen (he/him) is an Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Researcher at the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law. His research focuses on the evolving role and position of judges in a time when an increasing number of socially and politically sensitive issues are being brought before the courts. In particular, he examines how judges (should) shape their relationship with different societal domains, the parties involved in legal proceedings, and political authorities. In his research, Stijn frequently employs multidimensional research methods, drawing inspiration from innovative approaches developed outside the legal domain.

ELS Academy’s No-Show Policy:
Please note that the workshops are given by experts in the field who do this on a voluntary basis. Places are often limited and we have people on the waiting list. For this reason, the ELS Academy has a strict no-show policy. In case you are prevented from attending the workshop, kindly send an email to contact@elsacademy.nl at least 48 hours before the workshop to make space for people on the waiting list.
If you do not attend the workshop without prior cancellation, your supervisor will be informed about your no-show and you will not be able to register for another ELS Academy event for the next two months. This is also very unfortunate for us, however, it can be prevented if we receive a simple cancellation via e-mail.
Thank you for understanding and see you there!
